Static PNG vs interactive 3D mockup — which converts better?
A clear-eyed look at when a flat PNG mockup beats an interactive 3D one, and when the 3D version is worth the extra weight.
Both formats have a place on a modern product site. The honest answer depends on three variables: page weight budget, attention budget, and the specific conversion goal.
When static PNG wins
- Above-the-fold on a slow connection where every KB hurts.
- Email, App Store, press kits — anywhere interactivity can't render.
- Social cards (OG / Twitter), where the platform renders a still anyway.
When interactive 3D wins
- Hero sections on SaaS / app pages where dwell time correlates with signup.
- Case studies that benefit from a sense of physicality.
- Product Hunt and demo days where memorability is the conversion.
The pragmatic answer
Ship both. Use the static PNG for OG cards, emails, and the App Store. Use the 3D embed in the hero. We have a free in-browser PNG generator and an interactive embed — same device, same screenshot, two outputs.
